Originally founded in 2001, as an Orthodox Christian partnership between Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, both of Chicago, the collaboration lasted five years. The advantageous partnership enabled St. Sava Academy to flourish and we extend our warmest wishes to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and the Socrates School community for a successful future. With Socrates Greek School’s relocation, St. Sava Academy has built upon the roots of this promising foundation.
History was made on August 28, 2006, when St. Sava Academy opened its doors as an independent Serbian Orthodox parochial school. Students, parents, faculty and clergy full of love, joy and excitement, crowded the school foyer, as the academic year began. Forty students, clad in navy blue and white uniforms, lined up by grade with their teachers, as the clergy read prayers and led the opening benediction.
St. Sava Academy proudly bears the distinction of being the first dual-language Serbian Orthodox parochial schools for students in pre-school through eighth grade in the United States and Canada.
St. Sava Academy, the Parochial School of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, is located on the northwest-side of Chicago. The Academy provides comprehensive, daily, dual language instruction, along with a Serbian Orthodox perspective. The focus on family, moral, ethnic and cultural values culminates into an exceptional educational experience for future generations.
Enrollment offerings begin with preschool (age 3) and continues through the eighth grade. At each grade-level, class size is kept to a very favorable student/teacher ratio, with an attention to instructional innovations. Each classroom is equipped with computers, in addition to a supporting computer lab for technology instruction. The highly trained, experienced and devoted faculty are dedicated to supporting the highest educational standards. The Academy has earned Illinois State Board of Education registration as a parochial school.

The Federation of Serbian Sisters Circles operates the camps in the name of the Diocese. The Midwest Region Kolo maintains the Camp at New Gracanica. Through a Camp Committee , the Sisters upgrade the facilities, coordinate the staff and plan the camp season. They also care for the children as if they were their own. Modern Camp facilities are located in the Administration Building , where dormitory rooms, dining facilities and classrooms are available. Besides the Camp Director appointed by the Bishop, there is a Camp Priest each week who attends to the spiritual needs of the children. Counselors and workers provide daily supervision. The atmosphere of the monastery grounds provides an ideal atmosphere for the variety of religious, sports, social and cultural activities that occur at camp.
St.Sava Mission since 1962
In 1962, people of Serbian heritage in the Western USA set out to build a shining center of our culture, community and faith in Jackson, California, the site of the first Serbian Orthodox Christian church in North America.
Their goal: to build facilities for a children’s camp, a senior citizen’s home, education and other cultural and community needs. Their vehicle: the independent incorporation of our group.
Today, after over 45 years, the St. Sava Mission Foundation continues to faithfully preserve its Stewardship of this great and vital legacy.
With the children’s camp long-built and successful, today our goals remain a Senior Citizen Assisted-Living Home for our people; a Serbian Heritage Museum, Library & Cultural Center; historical building preservation; student scholarships; sports facilities; and a Serb youth exchange program.
These are community and cultural goals that our organization was originally created to achieve in 1962. And, they are needed now more than ever here in the USA.
